The State Treasurer is responsible for implementing the West Virginia Uniform
Unclaimed Property Act. Under this legislation, the Treasurer is the custodian
of all unclaimed property in the state. Unclaimed property includes items
such as bank accounts, matured insurance policies, stocks, bonds, safe deposit
box contents, weapons, and a wide variety of other items abandoned by their
original owners. The property is collected, processed, and kept or auctioned
under the Treasurer's authority. Money from this program is deposited in
the state's general revenue account or held indefinitely, until the original
owner or their heirs can be found. The state holds approximately 400,000
accounts worth $100,000,000. Since 1997, the Unclaimed Property Division
has returned approximately $60 million to rightful owners and collected over
$92 million from businesses.
The mission of the Unclaimed Property Division is to communicate, educate,
and implement programs, seminars, and procedures necessary to most effectively
and efficiently carry out the provisions of the Uniform Unclaimed Property
Act. The intent of the Act is to protect the property rights of the owners,
provide a custodial service for the owners abandoned property, and to return
the highest level of property to the owners as well as enhance revenue collections
for the State of West Virginia.
NOTE: The West Virginia Unclaimed Property Division DOES NOT CHARGE ANY FEES
for unclaimed property searches. All unclaimed property accounts, claimed by
the rightful owner, are paid in full in accordance with the West Virginia Code.
Potential owners of unclaimed property who are contacted by persons
or corporations seeking to provide unclaimed property search services for
a fee should first contact the Unclaimed Property Division for a "FREE" search
